Photographing the stars can be a very rewarding experience for the beginner. Simple star trails are relatively simple, all you need is a tripod and a camera with a B setting so you can keep the shutter open for a few minutes. For more experienced amateurs with a telescope wonderful pictures of the Moon can be acheived with only a basic digital camera. Many amateur astronomers focus on astrophotography, investing in telescopes and specialist CCD imaging devices. They can produce stunning pictures of the universe that were the remit of professionals a few years ago. Of course if you just want to see wonderful pictures, visit the Hubble Space Telescope Site site or buy a coffee table book.
