One of the best tools a beginner can buy is a book on stargazing. These books are packed with useful information and star maps. Some are aimed at the total beginner making identifying stars and constellations relatively easy. These books usually also include information about telescopes, observing the planets, meteor showers and astronomical events. Yearbooks, such as Patrick Moore's Yearbook of Astronomy, give up to date information. If you want to know exactly what is in the sky at any given time, a planetarium program such as Starry Night is very useful. The website Heavens Above gives very accurate and up-to-date information on the night sky and satellites and is suitable for someone with a little experience.
